Combine limitlessness with complete lack of expenditure – while we know that live video sharing is very expensive – what have we got?
YouTube is not a business. People are confused by the actions of YouTube because they try to understand YouTube from a business perspective.
YouTube was bought by alphabet to be a platform for scientific and business experiments. YouTube being unprofitable was most likely a given to Alphabet right from the beginning.
